Self Mastery

Robert Collier (1885-1950), American motivational speaker, was
famous for his views on the importance of self-confidence. He
repeatedly would impress upon his audience one of his most
heartfelt convictions, "Your chances of success in any
undertaking can always be measured by your belief in
yourself."
Mary Kay Ash, of cosmetics industry fame, echoes the same
principal. "Aerodynamically the bumblebee shouldn't be able
to fly, but the bumblebee doesn't know that, so it goes on
flying anyway," she points out.
"We wait all these years to find someone who understands us, I
thought, someone who accepts us as we are, someone with a
wizard's power to melt stone to sunlight, who can bring us
happiness in spite of trials, who can face our dragons in the
night, who can transform us into the soul we choose to be.
Just yesterday I found that magical Someone is the face we see
in the mirror: It's us and our homemade masks," said Richard
Bach, author of Jonathan Livingston Seagull.
Could it be that you have everything necessary for success
inside yourself, and all you need is belief in your own
abilities? Could it possibly be that easy?
I have previously written about my fondness of nature, of my
time spent enjoying a crystalline mountain lake, delighting in
the magnificence of a burning red sunset, or exploring the
cool forest, with boughs of dogwood and maple forming an
umbrella of life over my head.
On one of my most recent treks, a rippling lake spread out
like a banquet table before me. The surrounding fields were
resplendent with wildflowers reeling in the breeze. Lining
the water was a grand symphony of trees, every one with its
own unique type of grandeur.
Atop one of the trees was a tiny bird, barely visible to the
naked eye, singing at the top of its lungs. Its music filled
the waterfront and surrounding fields with a majestic
quality. Such a tiny bird, with such a big presence! No fear
that someone would not like it. No fear of criticism. No
fear of being too loud...or too brash...or any of a hundred
reasons that human beings give for not taking action on their
dreams.
The famous Fanny Brice had her say: "Let the world know you
as you are, not as you think you should be, because sooner or
later, if you are posing, you will forget the pose, and then
where are you?" Forget the pose. Follow your dream.
Pursue it with the spirit of a bloodhound, never giving up or
giving in!
You have a gift to give the world. You are the only one with
that ability. Use your guts and determination to see it
through to its magnificent finish. Do your best to make
your inner song heard.
