Self-Confidence

Hey, Kid, are you ready?
When are you going to spread your wings and fly?
You are the only one who knows your deepest dreams and the
great goals you want to achieve. You cannot expect that
someone will drop out of the sky to help you in your journey.
When you recognize, however, that you can help others achieve
their goals, then you can and will achieve yours, easily and
elegantly.
Walt Disney said, "Somehow I can't believe that there are any
heights that can't be scaled by a man who knows the secrets of
making dreams come true. This special secret, it seems to me,
can be summarized in four C's. They are curiosity, confidence,
courage, and constancy, and the greatest of all is confidence.
When you believe in a thing, believe in it all the way,
implicitly and unquestionably." This was a man who made
dreams come true from all sides of the diamond!
He satisfied dreams for scores of people. People who wanted
to author a timeless story. Animators who had talent and
ideas they wanted to manifest. Filmmakers who wished to
practice their craft. Directors who had visions of great
stories in their heads. Investors who had nothing more than
money to expand. Young actors and actresses who got their
breaks. The list is endless…
All due to a man with the confidence to press onward!
Author Earl Gray Stevens wrote, "Confidence, like art, never
comes from having all the answers; it comes from being open to
all the questions." If you examine the depths of this
statement, you will discover that the essence of success lies
in your ability to conquer your fear of the questions.
Several years ago a friend of mine was assigned the management
duties of a substantial business account. At the introductory
meeting, one of the directors of the business confronted her
with the question, "If the average length of experience among
your colleagues is seventeen years, how come we only got you
with seven years?" She looked him squarely in the eyes and
responded, "Because I am the best." No pomp. No
flinching…just a statement of fact.
Her reply was taken at face value, due to the instant
confidence she portrayed. From that day forward, the director
respected her opinion and accepted her decisions without
hesitation. Understand, self-confidence must be backed with a
commitment to personal excellence, a commitment that my friend
practiced daily, both in her professional life and in her
personal life. As Roger Staubach said, "Confidence doesn't
come out of nowhere. It's a result of something... hours and
days and weeks and years of constant work and dedication."
Without commitment, you are being pompous and boastful, like a
gong banging in the wind. With commitment, you have the
nourishment necessary to nurture self-confidence, like Babe
Ruth who exclaimed, "Watch my dust."
I always liked George Bernard Shaw with his dry wit and candid
spirit. In one of Shaw's essays he wrote, "One man who has a
mind and knows it can always beat ten men who haven't and
don't."
