Goal Setting
Founder - Editor - Host
"When you dance, your purpose is not to get to a certain place
on the floor. It's to enjoy each step along the way," says Dr.
Wayne Dyer.
Goal setting is a complex process. You may be tempted to
believe that you should make a list and do those things on the
list. You may b e surprised to learn that the process I just
described is "List Setting."
Goal Setting extends much deeper into your mind and spirit.
You need to envision the type of person you want to become,
the feelings associated with your end result, the folks around
you who will be a significant part of your life.
You need to clearly evaluate where you are today, being aware
of your greatest assets, talents, and abilities. Decide what
you need to do to make those assets stronger and more
valuable. However difficult, you must make a daily commitment
to do three things each day, that you really don't want to do,
but if you do them will move you closer to your goal.
You need to clearly identify your weaknesses, in order to
eliminate them, quarantine them, or turn them into strengths.
For example, if you read more, you will open your life to a
totally different way of thinking - to a "success mentality."
Reading may be a difficult thing to commit to doing each day.
Just add 15 minutes to your day - as soon as you arise, or at
lunch time - to do this one thing. You will be amazed at the
world you open to yourself.
You need to know that no one has all the answers. If you are
superb at visualization, there will still be parts of the
picture that will seem foggy to you. Henry David Thoreau
wrote, "We must walk consciously only part way toward our
goal, and then leap in the dark to our success."
Authors and success mentors always speak of the "darkness"
along the way. It is a fact that you will have tremendous
enthusiasm at the start of a new project. As time moves on,
the spirit begins to wear down because you will not always
know what to do - you may have a gap in knowledge or
experience. Roadblocks arise.
It is at this point that you take a leap of faith. Believe
that you are nearest to success, and plunge forward with
courage and full belief in self. You have that initial vision
in your mind. Use that vision to your fullest capacity, and
believe yourself already there.
Little by little, you will notice that you are giving others
encouragement, and helping them along the way. They are
looking to you for guidance. They see you as a mentor. The
understanding that you may be a role model for others is
empowering and will renew your enthusiasm. It feels great to
pull others with you in your commitment toward success! Every
day will then get you closer to your goal. Elbert Hubbard
affirmed, "Know what you want to do, hold the thought firmly,
and do every day what should be done, and every sunset will
see you that much nearer to your goal."
You have the power to live the life you envision.
"I'm convinced that we can write and live our own scripts more
than most people will acknowledge. I also know the price that
must be paid. It's a real struggle to do it. It requires
visualization and affirmation. It involves living a life of
integrity, starting with making and keeping promises, until
the whole human personality the senses, the thinking, the
feeling, and the intuition are ultimately integrated and
harmonized," wrote Stephen Covey.
One final thought. If you believe that you may not want to
reach your goal because you fear that, once there, you will
have nothing more to shoot for, purge that thought from your
mind. Of this, Bette Davis said, "No set goal achieved
satisfies. Success only breeds a new goal. The golden apple
devoured has seeds. It is endless."
