"Tenacity
is a pretty fair substitute for bravery, and the best form of
tenacity I know is expressed in a Danish fur trapper's
principle: 'The next mile is the only one a person really has
to make,'" said Eric Sevareid (1912-1992), American
journalist. This is a man who confronted the life and death
issues of the day with guts and determination. One of "Murrow's
Boys," the CBS War correspondent covered the outbreak of World
War II in Europe in 1939. In 1943, he traveled to the Far
East, where he was required to parachute from a plane into
China and navigate his crew out of Japanese-controlled
jungles.
Recipient of Honorary Degrees
Sevareid was the recipient of the
Peabody Award in 1950, 1964, and 1976; three Emmy Awards; two
Overseas Press Club Awards; Harry S. Truman Award, 1981; and
scores of awards in the media sector.
Who
ever said tenacity doesn't work?
Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914), American author and editor wrote,
"Tenacity is a certain quality of the human hand in its
relation to the coin of the realm. It attains its highest
development in the hand of authority and is considered a
serviceable equipment for a career in politics." Famous for
his Civil War and supernatural stories, as well as for his
legendary wit, Bierce mysteriously disappeared in 1913, while
attempting to join Pancho Villa in Mexico. Bierce remains an
enigma to this day.
The
power of tenacity reaches across all walks of life, from
writing and politics, to science and sports. Muhammad Ali had
it. Oprah Winfrey has it. Abraham Lincoln had it, as did
Thomas Jefferson and Bill Gates. "Let me tell you the secret
that has led me to my goal: my strength lies solely in my
tenacity," wrote Louis Pasteur (1822-1895), French chemist and
microbiologist.
Tenacity works!
