Adversity is a natural part of life. The darkest hour is your
opportunity to shine. Bono of U2, spokesman for NetAid and
the Jubilee 2000 project to end Third World Debt puts it this
way: "Midnight is where the day begins."
Many business leaders have withstood the trials of adversity
in the development of their product line, people like Fritz
Maytag, Thomas Edison and Mike Litman. Their saving grace was
their belief that they had a commitment to do their best…they
had a goal that was worth the effort needed to surmount
obstacles. Their tenacity developed an internal
willingness to create, innovate, and analyze their efforts,
which led to eventual success.
Eunice Lawson, inventor of the Seat Belt Buddy, which she
sells in her business, Universal Medical Emergency Devices,
says, "My key to survival has been to work toward small goals
each day, week, and month. When going through hard times, I
reflect on where I first started and look at the progress I
have made. Oftentimes I feel as if I am getting nowhere, but,
when I look back, it makes me see that those tiny steps made
in days gone by have become steady stepping stones to reach
the ultimate goal of success."
Although adversity can loom as a giant force, it has many
shades and colors. The smallest erosion can be wearing and
troublesome – a constant challenge to your inner self. "It
isn't the mountain ahead that wears you out; it's the grain of
sand in your shoe," wrote Robert W. Service. Forming the
habit of perseverance, with a firm resolve to see it through
to the end or die fighting, will result in ultimate success.
When you develop such resolve, you will identify tools and
mentors to assist you along the way. You will analyze your
progress, and make adjustments that will lead to more positive
results.
Never give up. Look instead, for the person inside yourself
who has more to develop. Look instead, for the creativity
that has not yet been manifest. Look for the strength you
hold in reserve for the tough times. You are a winner! Move
forward with tenacity.
