How many times have you confused yourself today?
Self-mastery, singleness-of-purpose, total focus - All are
necessary characteristics for the accomplishment of any goal.
Yet, how often do you alter your thinking with the emotion of
the moment?
We are all emotional beings, driven by the passions that light
us up inside. Passions of sex, or anger or
excitement…passions of inner conflict between what we think we
would like, and what we know will not benefit us…passions of
our own self-image versus the reality of our dissatisfying
lives.
"The one self-knowledge worth having is to know one's own
mind," said Francis H. Bradley, British philosopher. Knowing
your own mind is key to being able to strengthen weaknesses
that may be holding you back from success. By answering basic
questions for personal assessment, you may discover patterns
that are not in line with what you believe you want. Some of
these may be:
·
Do you spend more time thinking about success or failure?
·
Do you feel self-pity for your lot in life? What do you get
out of it?
·
Do you have a defined, major purpose in life? Define it.
What is your plan to achieve it? Have you set up a time-frame
for its achievement?
·
Do others easily influence you in either a negative or a
positive sense?
·
What are your three most damaging weaknesses?
·
What are your most inspiring character traits?
·
Do you form your own opinion, or are you influenced by the
opinions of others?
You can only know your own mind by taking accurate inventory
of yourself, assessing your strengths and weaknesses,
analyzing your goals, abandoning your excuses and laying out
definite steps toward the achievement of your goals.
Elias Canetti, Austrian novelist, wrote, "The self-explorer,
whether he wants to or not, becomes the explorer of everything
else. He learns to see himself, but suddenly, provided he was
honest, all the rest appears, and it is as rich as he was,
and, as a final crowning, richer."
