Self Mastery

How many times have you heard someone say: "Just be
yourself" as you are gearing up for the next great
challenge? In actuality, the average guy has not developed
his personal self to the level required for that next
challenge, and finds himself retreating, as he is about to
jump into the lion's den. It is no wonder that so many people
drop their resolve and fail to take action.
You must re-invent yourself!
Re-invention is a bold step, in and of itself. It requires
careful self-analysis. Do you procrastinate? Do you have
sufficient self-confidence? If not, why not? Do you lack
skills or knowledge? How can you increase your level of
knowledge? With whom can you associate in order to gain
knowledge through the osmosis of common interests and ordinary
conversation? Are you goal oriented? Do you shrink in the
face of challenge? What is your level of self-respect? Do
you have a positive outlook? Do you have a tendency to see
why something "won't work" instead of why it "will work'?
Your next step will be in gaining the confidence required to
propel you forward. Read - I would recommend something like
Human Relations: Personal and Professional Development (2nd
Edition) by David A. DeCenzo and Beth Silhanek. Listen to
motivating tapes and CD's. Watch the videos of the "power
giants" - not just personal development gurus, but the leaders
of huge corporations. Gain access to their speeches. Watch
commercials with careful analysis of how they appeal to the
target market.
For example, Cabela's, with a target toward hunting and
outdoorsmanship, appeals to their niche market from the eyes
of a little boy dreaming of the day he can "hunt as a man."
What better way to tug on the heartstrings of a guy?
Allow yourself to be creative. Find your inspiration.
Mentally place yourself into the future. Picture who you are
and how you got there. Cast aside any notion that someone
else would think it "silly." Aldous Huxley wrote, "The vast
majority of human beings dislike and even actually dread all
notions with which they are not familiar... hence it comes
about that at their first appearance innovators have always
been derided as fools and madmen."
For everyone who considers it absurd, there may be a dozen who
take you seriously. Once they get used to the idea, it will
be your "brand."
Take action! You are ready! You are no longer the one
without a plan. You are no longer the one taken for granted.
You are who you have decided! You have taken the steps to
direct your own life. You are no longer the puppet of others,
working for their dreams. You are working for your own.
Be persistent. Keep going.
This re-invention process is cyclical, and in need of constant
rejuvenation. With computers, you save often. With your
human spirit, you refresh often. You will then begin to see
an evolution of magnanimous proportions that can have
outstanding opportunities with global effects.
Consider the computer - an actual product that endured
constant revision and re-invention - and still is. In 1949,
Popular Mechanics wrote, "Computers in the future may have
only 1,000 vacuum tubes and perhaps only weigh 1 1/2 tons."
How things have changed!
What will you be in the future?
