Self Mastery

American humorist Josh Billings (1815-1885) wrote, "It's not
only the most difficult thing to know one's self, but the most
inconvenient." When you decide to take serious account of
your strengths and weaknesses, you may find that one of your
most severe flaws is avoidance of self-evaluation, and
following through with steps to correct the habits that stand
in your way of total success.
Success is reached one step at a time, but there is no sense
in taking the escalator down when you are trying to get to the
top of the stairs. Honest reflection is not enough. You must
also set serious guidelines in place for carrying out your
goals, and follow those guidelines with tenacity.
"Getting in touch with your true self must be your first
priority," says Tom Hopkins, American Sales Trainer. If you
claim you don't have the fear of rejection, but you have been
"spinning your wheels" by performing non-productive busy work,
you are procrastinating. This is counter-productive to
reaching your goals.
Organize your workspace to reflect a productive environment.
Set up a book for networking, with consistent follow-through
methods. Use a calendar or fluorescent "yellow pad" as a
strong reminder of your commitment.
Create a space for organized cataloging of your writings,
letters, testimonials, procedures, supplies and reference
materials. Then follow through with immediacy to keep things
in more accessible reach, without wasting precious time
re-hashing through mountains of paperwork. Organize your
computer files, deleting all files that lack relevance.
B. C. Forbes wrote, "A price has to be paid for success.
Almost invariably those who have reached the summits worked
harder and longer, studied and planned more assiduously,
practiced more self-denial, overcame more difficulties than
those of us who have not risen so far." Understand that such
tenacity becomes a habit, and does not harm the human body or
the human spirit when it is infused with enthusiasm and the
desire to give a piece of yourself to the world.
