Self Respect

Founder - Editor - Host

What makes people great?

Igor Stravinsky, Russian born composer and conductor, wrote, "Just as appetite comes by eating so work brings inspiration."  Stravinsky is hailed for his broad variety of styles in musical composition. His unique genius displays his musical persona in each of these styles.

Although Stravinsky came from a musical family, he was expected to pursue studies in law due to family expectations, and therefore, had limited training in music.  At the University of St. Petersburg, he made the acquaintance of Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov and studied with him.  His work quickly gained notice, and he was soon commissioned to write a ballet for the Ballets Russes in Paris.

His works, Petrushka in 1911 and The Rite of Spring, his most famous work, quickly followed this in 1913.  Over the course of his life, his music underwent remarkable change, a reflection of the influences and complexities of his personal life and the political events of the time.

Samuel Butler (1835-1902), British novelist and essayist wrote, "Every man's work, whether it be literature or music or pictures or architecture or anything else, is always a portrait of himself."  Your work gains structure from your personal experiences, mastery from your belief system, and passion from your inner desires.  External influences such as societal change, political upheaval, and religious discriminations can also leave their imprint on your vision. Martha Graham adds, "There is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost."

You must pursue the path that is yours alone.  Unique abilities are a part of our nature, and it is up to us to display our distinctive talents for the rest of the world.

"Being on the tightrope is living; everything else is waiting," said Karl ("The Great") Wallenda.

"Actually I did not invent the seven habits, they are universal principles and most of what I wrote about is just common sense. I am embarrassed when people talk about the Covey Habits, and dislike the idea of being some sort of guru." -- Stephen R. Covey
