"Fight one more round," said James Corbett. "When your arms
are so tired that you can hardly lift your hands to come on
guard, fight one more round. When your nose is bleeding and
your eyes are black and you are so tired that you wish your
opponent would crack you one on the jaw and put you to sleep,
fight one more round - remembering that the man who always
fights one more round is never whipped."
Fighting one more round in the face of adversity is what will
make your life a successful one. You and I, as human beings
with an unlimited array of choices before us, also have an
unlimited combination of circumstances facing us daily.
At times, the accumulation of your past choices, made in
haste, descend like a hurricane upon your life. Adversity
hits.
Then there are those random episodes when adversity chooses
you! Without warning, it waits until the most inopportune
moment to arrive. If you keep striving with persistence, you
will ultimately meet with success.
Success is not always measured as accumulated wealth. Riches
of the spirit, riches that enhance the lives of others, riches
of connectedness - all these add to our worth in life.
Photographer Jacob Riis (1849-1914) was born in Denmark, the
third of fifteen children. He immigrated to the US in 1870
but was unable to find work in those early years. Undaunted,
he pressed onward, becoming one of the most notable
photographers of the time. His images of poverty in America
rose the level of awareness in this country, opening the door
that aided thousand of people. Over the course of twenty
years, Riis lectured and wrote over a dozen books on behalf of
the poor and suffering.
He said, "When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a
stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred times
without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred
and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not
that blow that did it - but all that had gone before."
"Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.
Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men
with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a
proverb. Education alone will not; the world is full of
educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are
omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will
solve the problems of the human race," boomed John Calvin
Coolidge.
