Mark Twain wrote, "Twenty years from now you will be more
disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones
you did so. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the
safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore.
Dream. Discover."
If you have ever reflected back on a difficult period in your
life, or one in which you drove yourself onward through lack
of sleep, against all odds or any number of difficulties, you
can see the depth in Twain's statement. You never remember
the details of the difficulty. It seems miniscule, as if it
were a blink in time - a tiny ripple in the tapestry of your
life. If you document these difficult times, you may have
some frame of reference. Of course, if you had time to
document your hardship, you would have thrown away the
smallest opportunity to reap the rewards on a segment of your
dreams.
That is why it is so important to act now - to make your
difference starting today, even if your vision seems cloudy.
"Trying to understand is like straining through muddy water.
Be still and allow the mud to settle," said Lao Tzu. Clarity
comes as you move in the direction you have determined - in
the direction of your dreams. In working toward positive
goals, you will discover talents in yourself that you were
unaware existed. You may discover a passion for music, a
talent for public speaking, or the adrenaline rush of making
the numbers work. Become impervious to distraction, and keep
with it. If your life cycle changes mid-way, do everything in
your power to plough onward. Success may be at the next bend
in the road. If you change your focus before reaching your
goal, self-deprecating doubt will follow you into every future
challenge, subconsciously marring your chances at future
success.
Thomas Edison said, "The first requisite for success is the
ability to apply your physical and mental energies to one
problem incessantly without growing weary." Carry on with
persistence. Accomplishment of a difficult goal is the
sweetest thing on earth.
