Patience - Self Control

Self Respect

Founder - Editor - Host

Margaret Thatcher said, "I am extraordinarily patient, provided I get my own way in the end," a revealing statement from a powerful force, the United Kingdom's first woman Prime Minister who served that position from 1979 to 1990.

Patience has sometimes been called a virtue, but it is actually a force, one of the incredible intangible forces found in nature.  Like water, it seems soft and refreshing.  It has the power to wear away rock when coupled with time, its closest companion.  Its power is not readily apparent - this is what makes it so effective.

"Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience," wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson.  Patience over time becomes the power of persistence.  Where persistence lingers, success is not far behind.

"A statesman wants courage and a statesman wants vision; but believe me, after six months' experience, he wants first, second, third and all the time - patience," said Stanley Baldwin, three time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1923-1924; 1924-1929; and 1935-1937.  Patience is the force that eventually brings opposing opinions in line with congruent thought.  Patience is the power that wins over hearts and can cause effective change.

When building your own abilities, have patience.  You may see your small results as a glider in the wind, rather than a rocket with force and speed.  If you can see your target, and measure some results, have patience and continue in your methodical approach.  Success exists just beneath the surface.  A iceberg may appear to be small on the surface, but its power expands in depth and breadth beneath.

Patience should not exist in a vacuum.  While moving methodically, take action on challenges that need attention.  You will be better positioned when the ice finally breaks loose.

Thomas Edison added his own twist on the power of patience:  "Everything comes to him who hustles while he waits."  Even the tortoise knew that.
