"The Promised Land always lies on the other side of a
Wilderness," says Havelock Ellis. You must dare to walk the
path that has no footprints if you desire to fulfill your true
purpose in life.
Bette Howland put it another way. "For a long time it seemed
to me that real life was about to begin, but there was always
some obstacle in the way. Something had to be got through
first, some unfinished business; time still to be served, a
debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on
me that these obstacles were my life."
When will most of us realize that the success lies in the
journey?
I like to go off alone, from time to time, to experience the
spiritual peace of the intangible forces of God and Nature. I
will go to an unpopulated lake, to a park, or wildlife
preserve - to just "be."
In one of my more recent treks, I started walking an
unfamiliar nature trail, as dusk was close to settling onto
the resplendent earth. I arrived at a split path, where both
trails were completely unknown to me. I recall experiencing
anxiety over which to choose - the one that appeared open and
lengthy, or the more claustrophobic, but beautiful cut through
a forest of pines, dogwood and sweet gum trees.
I was a solo traveler, and the unfamiliarity of both courses
carried with them the question of safety.
I chose the path through the deep forest, uneasy though it
seemed. It was extraordinary and breath-taking. Since I did
not know how long it rambled through the wood, however, I
continued to feel an uneasiness as I ventured on, anxious for
the other side to open into a land of familiarity.
The path ended quickly, and I realized that I had missed some
of the loveliness of the forest, due to my fear of the
unknown.
The loveliness of life, although unfamiliar and unpleasant at
times, is there for our continuous benefit, as well. Live
life as it comes. Advance forward with a passion for your
purpose. Give all you have to give, consistently, steadily,
and without restraint.
Success is not just on the other side of the forest path. The
path, too, bears the signs of your success. Enjoy the
journey.
