Overcoming Adversity

Adversity

Founder - Editor - Host

Rabindranath Tagore, the voice of India's spiritual heritage, wrote, "Let me not pray to be sheltered from dangers, but to be fearless in facing them. Let me not beg for the stilling of my pain, but for the heart to conquer it."  Upheaval in life can have devastating effects that leave lasting scars on our spirits.  It is up to us to tame those dangers, and to confront them with the determination of a raging bull.  When we face adversity with steadfast footing, we display courage we may not have recognized in ourselves.

"The gem cannot be polished without friction, nor man perfected without trials," teaches the Chinese Proverb.  For many who have suffered devastation at the hands of the Asian Tsunami during the last week of December of 2004, life became a challenge beyond their wildest imaginings.  The friction they bore was lined with unbearable sadness in many cases.

It is within this unbearable sadness that the true heroes will always emerge.  Countless first aid workers, emergency technicians, and "average Joes" gave their time and money to help these people along the Asian coast.  "Vitality shows in not only the ability to persist but the ability to start over," said F. Scott Fitzgerald.  It was as if he had seen this type of anguish, and understood the magnanimous effort needed to overcome such adversity.

Within the framework of each person’s life circle exist challenges with health, or substance abuse, or physiological and psychological adversity.  A simple cold can turn into pneumonia, or a dot on the skin can signal melanoma.  These are inescapable scenes in our lives, which can be conquered through a persistent call to action.  These human challenges have launched great discoveries in the medical field and have led to the development of highly successful product-lines.

Jonas Salk said, "I have had dreams and I have had nightmares, but I have conquered my nightmares because of my dreams."  Perhaps he fully understood the power of the human spirit.
