If you were given a million dollars to build your fortune, how
would you use it?
This is a good exercise to use in measuring your resolve to
accomplish something significant in your life. Let's take the
question up a notch. If you were given a million dollars, how
would you double it?
Many people believe it takes money to make money. My
challenge to you is this: If you DID have money - i.e. a
million dollars - how would you use it to make more? What
would you do? How would you use your life?
Would you be afraid you would lose the million dollars? If I
told you that George Bernard Shaw said, "A life spent making
mistakes is not only more honorable but more useful than a
life spent doing nothing," would you become less fearful of
messing up?
The point is that indecision, doubt, and fear are the three
negatives that hold you away from your grandest dreams.
Indecision is the seed that, if allowed to grow and multiply,
becomes a garden of doubt. With enough doubt - self-doubt and
disbelief in others - fear is given a fertile ground upon
which to sink its gnarly roots, with little hope of ever
letting go.
Many people worry endlessly about the bad things that could
happen. They become experts in tragedy, rather than experts
in discovering the wealth and opportunity that awaits them.
Of this Calvin Coolidge said, "If you see ten troubles coming
down the road, you can be sure that nine will run into the
ditch before they reach you." That leaves pretty good odds
that translate into great things happening for you, if you
will believe in yourself and take action.
"The courage of life is often a less dramatic spectacle than
the courage of a final moment; but it is no less a magnificent
mixture of triumph and tragedy," wrote John F. Kennedy. Your
life is magnificent as it is, with greater things to come
through its mix of ying and yang. Your strength becomes
greater with each passing challenge, with each passing joy.
"Nobody trips over mountains. It is the small pebble that
causes you to stumble. Pass all the pebbles in your path and
you will find you have crossed the mountain," reads the
Chinese proverb. A proverb of astonishing wisdom.
Just pass the pebbles. Plan, think, and take action.
