Do you know your own inner strength? This is your ability to
work through adversity - your ability to push onward in the
face of overwhelming circumstances. Your resolve to keep on
going when the world around you seems to be at odds with your
purposes, emotionally and physically.
Every person who attains a high level of success develops the
ability to surmount difficulties. Life has a way of sending
"hurricanes" to the door of every human being without
warning. Your talent to hang on in the windstorm directly
affects your outcome. Dolly Parton explains, "Storms make
trees take deeper roots."
It is to your advantage to develop the strength of a weed,
perhaps a thistle. If the thistle is not native to your
geographic area, you are missing one of the most resilient
creations on the planet. This botanical marvel has prickly
foliage that extends down the stem to the dirt line,
discouraging the predator from touching it. Its roots are a
complex network that quickly extends itself beneath the earth,
allowing the plant to spread and duplicate from below. The
thistle produces a purple flower with upright head, giving it
the skill of reproducing by seedpod, as well. It can grow
despite the circumstances, and are even seen in roadways,
burned areas, or ditch banks. Tough little guy, isn't it?
"Strength is a matter of the made-up mind," said John
Beecher. Decision, clarity of thought within yourself,
singleness-of-purpose. These are the qualities that will pull
you through when situations stand at odds with your goals.
Absolute necessity creates the state of perseverance that is
crucial for triumph over casualty. Napoleon Hill refers to
the increased power of desire that occurs when you no longer
have any path of retreat. He tells the story of a great
warrior who sailed to the country of a powerful foe and had
his troops unload the ships. Then he gave the order to burn
the ships. In a powerful oratory, the warrior leader boomed,
"You see the ships going up in smoke. That means we cannot
leave these shores alive unless we win! We now have no choice
- we win - or we perish." They won. Euripedes(480-406 B.C.),
Greek poet and playwright wrote, "Nothing has more strength
than dire necessity."
As you ponder the solutions to your adversity, evaluate your
choices with the end in mind. Determine if and how you can
enlist the assistance of your friends or associates. Take a
decisive step forward. Thoreau wrote, "For an impenetrable
shield, stand inside yourself." This is where you will
discover your creative genius, that part of yourself with the
talent to find solutions.
Commit yourself to your course of action, moving forward with
a determined spirit. When you take a decisive step toward a
solution, you gain greater control over it. You can then
steer the ship toward shore with confidence.
