One of John Wayne's famous lines was "Courage
is being scared to death - and saddling up anyway." This is
the very essence of a life committed to success.
Your
most comfortable posture may be as a couch-potato. The very
act uses little energy. You can pass criticism onto the
performers and you are insulated from the judgment of others.
Courage is not needed, unless you wrestle the remote away from
your children, of course.
The "vegging-out"
of America is deadly. It destroys goals, eliminates the
development of ideas, and eradicates the need to develop
courage and determination.
Ruth
Gordon, American actress, pointed out that "Courage is like a
muscle; it is strengthened by use." It may be difficult for
you to believe that some presenters who seem so suave and
articulate in the spotlight may, indeed, need to strengthen
their self-confidence as much as you do. They may be relative
newcomers to the performance stage. Many techniques used by
seasoned public speakers may be foreign to them. They may not
fully understand the lingo used by the public-address
technicians or the meeting planner. Perhaps they prepared a
presentation for 1,200 people and only 5 showed up. They may
have been told some critical piece of equipment would be
available, only to find that it was overlooked in the
pre-production rush, and no back-up is available. These kinds
of situations can dramatically affect the confidence level of
the presenter at any given venue. Self-confidence needs
constant replenishment in all people, or it quickly wanes.
You will
often find recommendations from those who have achieved great
success, to read quotations and books on personal
development. Powerful people read for an hour every morning,
before they start into the meat of their day. They gain
insight and encouragement through the eyes and experiences of
others. It is like taking vitamins that pump-up your energy.
Although this practice may seem like an insignificant habit,
it increases your level of enthusiasm. It renews your
internal reserve of courage, confidence and persistence.
"It is
with the heart that one sees rightly; what is essential is
invisible to the eye," wrote Antoine de Saint-Exupery, French
aviator and author.
Persistence in self-development will markedly advance you
toward your determined goals. When you commit to this
advancement, miracles begin. William Inge said, "Nobody is
bored when he is trying to make something that is beautiful,
or to discover something that is true."
Keep your life interesting.
