"Little strokes fell great oaks," wrote Benjamin Franklin in
Poor Richard's Almanac. Yes, the Almanac was written to
entertain, with a light spirit; however, Franklin often wrote
condensed little gems within that popular little digest. It
is always the small bits of effort that mesh together in your
life that will create greatness.
If you are fortunate to engage in conversation with those who
have become highly successful, you will discover that their
success was not just born within one great, magnanimously bold
deal that was hammered into shape in an hour. Attaching one
small action to the next, continuously, formed the greatest
success stories until the rest of the world could see the
results.
Look at the Mozilla Foundation, for example. For several
years, Mozilla has been a non-profit organization -part of the
Open Directory Project on the internet - a group of about 8
people working diligently in one room, for little or no pay -
you know, for the sheer joy of it! Suddenly, it appears that
Mozilla is shaking it up in the business world! One such
researcher on the project tells the story about being at her
fitness club - When another woman discovered that she worked
with Mozilla, she fell on her knees in front of her, thanking
her for the work she has done, saying, "You changed my life!"
The stunned researcher had no idea she was doing anything
extraordinary - She was simply doing what she loved to do.
Nelson Boswell said, "Here is the simple but powerful rule...
always give people more than they expect to get."
The discovery that your value lies in creating more of what
you love to do is an important key in your journey toward your
goals. Value your own self! Your skills are unique, even if
they seem insignificant to you.
The simple "staple" is just a piece of bent wire - yet, how
many folks rely on this simple wire on a daily basis: to hold
reports together, as magazine bindings, to secure heavy
cardboard cartons, for the installation of carpeting, and in
the latest surgical procedures. Just a piece of bent wire!
Give the world your best, even if it is simple. Your
creativity, joined with others, is limitless. Do your utmost
to create value, to give more than expected, to leave each
place better than you found it. Give your all!
"I hate the giving of the hand unless the whole man
accompanies it," wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. Your hand is the
extension of your mind and body - the extension of all that is
possible in the world.
