Goal Setting
Founder - Editor - Host
Mark Victor Hansen said, "Ideas attract money, time, talents,
skills, energy and other complementary ideas that will bring
them into reality." What better way to get ideas than to
write a list of goals?
Let me tell you a story about the power of the mind when it is
set into action.
Six years ago my daily life consisted of "treading water" day
to day. I was working three jobs, yet struggling with the
daily "trials" of life. Despite my circumstances, I
cultivated the habit of keeping a positive attitude. You see,
I knew my life had to change - that I wanted to live more than
I was living.
As I hastened into a local convenience store on a random
Saturday morning, I was fortunate to strike up a conversation
with an upbeat gentleman named Jeff Mills.
Picture the scene. A misty sky, the sun peeking just over the
hills in the distance. A stop at a convenience store. The
aroma of coffee and bagels, blending with smiles and a few
pleasant words among the store patrons. A few minutes later,
I was gifted with the benevolence of a free ticket, worth
seventy-something dollars, to see Mark Victor Hansen speak at
the Adams Mark Hotel in Philadelphia.
I was excited! Upon entering my workplace, I showed my boss
the treasure that had been given to me. He rolled his eyes.
I was impervious to his cynicism.
A few weeks later, the "Big Event" arrived. Mark Victor
Hansen: Speaking on "Goal Setting." I had never thought about
goal setting. That was simply something left to executives
and athletes. Not to a single mother with two kids and three
jobs!
Hansen pointed out, "Dedicate yourself to the good you deserve
and desire for yourself. Give yourself peace of mind. You
deserve to be happy. You deserve delight."
Was he talking to me? Maybe he was talking to the guy behind
me. Hansen defined a goal as a "dreamy destination with a
deadline."
"Write down 101 goals for yourself in 20 minutes. Set
outstanding goals. Write them quickly. Don't think, just
write. Write everything inside yourself. It's all there.
Focus tonight. Do it now," he said. "You will never do ALL
that you dream, but you will NEVER do what you don't dream."
He pointed out that a balanced life must encompass the
following: Health goals, family goals, financial goals,
social goals, spiritual goals, and mental goals. He also
recommended that these goals be written in your "Future
Diary," so you can refer to them. You can add to your dreams
as you grow and mark them off with "V"s as you attain them. "V"s
are the "victories" that you have achieved for yourself.
"Improve your business, your life, your relationships, your
finances and your health. When you do, the whole world
improves." I took him seriously. My life has changed
dramatically. A journey of ten thousand miles begins with a
single step.
If you haven't ever written your first 101 goals, do it now.
Then begin, at once, to act on your goals. Johann Wolfgang
von Goethe said, "Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin
it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it."
