I like to think of Thomas Edison (1847-1931) as one of my
friends and mentors. Although his existence passed long before
I was born, his ideas were so "innovative-for-his-time" that I
consider him a great role model.
Thomas Edison has said, "From his neck down a man is worth a
couple of dollars a day, from his neck up he is worth anything
that his brain can produce."
That's a pretty strong statement.
Persistence of thought is the only way to assure success. I am
not referring to fantasy and daydreams that are used as a
substitute for action, but rather, the constancy and
singleness-of-purpose needed to create a mind-image, to set
your goals into motion, and to proceed until the idea becomes
reality in the physical sense.
Edison stated, "The first requisite for success is to develop
the ability to focus and apply your mental and physical
energies to the problem at hand - without growing weary.
Because such thinking is often difficult, there seems to be no
limit to which some people will go to avoid the effort and
labor that is associated with it."
If you doubt Edison's words, do your own survey on the
subject. Test yourself.
Choose your goal. Make one that can stretch beyond what you
originally considered attainable for you. Include all the
thoughts, sounds, aromas, and feelings associated with the
achievement of your goal. Create a tactile record of your
thoughts by writing them down.
Focus EVERY DAY by concentrating your thoughts toward the
achievement of your goal. Do this little exercise at least
twice a day. One thing that you will find, over a long period
of time, is that Edison is correct when he states that "such
thinking is often difficult." Although this seems like an easy
exercise, you will begin to understand that persistence and
dedication to your "thought goal" can be wearying when you
occasionally lose sight of the horizon.
Persist.
"Many of life's failures are experienced by people who did not
realize how close they were to success when they gave up,"
Edison continued.
You have seen this in movies. It is one of the dramatic
turning points in countless stories. The main character either
chooses to continue despite the odds against him, or gives up
without ever knowing how close he came to success.
Make your life the drama that leads to success. The
possibilities are without limit.
