Most people have never considered the importance of dressing
for success, beyond wearing a suit and tie to a business
function. There is actually a whole field of education on the
subject, one that requires a college degree in order to be
fully educated on this complex field.
In the book, The Meanings of Dress, a Damhorst, Miller,
Michelman, Fairchild Book, it says, "Professionals working in
the field rely on an interdisciplinary preparation that
includes academic study in physiology, psychology, sociology,
anthropology, material culture, history, communications,
semiotics, aesthetics or design, home and family, consumer
behavior, economics, marketing, business management, popular
cultural, gender studies, minority studies, and more."
"Understanding the functions of dress facilitates our
interactions with others, and moves us to reflect upon and
understand ourselves."
Did you realize that "dressing" had this type of complexity?
You often hear of professionals who are really "polished."
This is the result of careful study on the image that is
projected - not just a matter of the clothing you wear, but
also the way you carry yourself, the tone of your voice, the
way you wear your hair, and the attitude you project.
Professional speakers learn to walk tall. They modulate their
voice - they listen to themselves when speaking, in order to
cast off any unpleasant dialects or tonal qualities in their
voice. If you question this, watch the re-runs of the
presidential debates of 2004.
"Dress is a reflection of larger social processes such as
fashion systems, political conflict, hegemony, technological
changes, organizational evolutions, generational experiences
as well as cultural change in general," says Judith Rasband,
professional consultant at
www.conselle.com, a an agency that deals in the
professional education of image projection.
Consider the importance of your image. Many people say.
"It's what's inside that counts." The truth is that you must
be sure your outside is a reflection of your inside. In the
professional world, it all counts.
