Commitment
Founder - Editor - Host
How committed are you to your goals? Do you dive into each
challenge with the determination that you will conquer at
least one every day, taking yourself closer to your ultimate
purpose? Are distractions a minor ruffle of wind?
Mark Twain wrote, "Twenty years from now you will be more
disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones
you did so. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the
safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore.
Dream. Discover."
The challenge of following through on your goals is that they
require constant nourishment. The typical New Years
Resolution is dropped by the time the end of January rolls
around. We don't like to think about it, because we have
"modified" our thoughts to what we decide are newer and better
ideas. "Most of us serve our ideals by fits and starts. The
person who makes a success of living is one who sees his goal
steadily and aims for it unswervingly. That's dedication."
wrote Cecil B. DeMille.
How do you keep that dedication going?
Milton Garland, refrigeration expert who held 41
patents, wrote, "My advice is to go into something and stay
with it until you like it. You can't like it until you obtain
expertise in that work. And once you are an expert, it's a
pleasure."
Become the expert.
All experts began knowing nothing. They began, perhaps
timidly, quietly, slowly. They began by reading books, doing
research on the Internet, talking to those they considered to
be experts. They wrote and assisted in projects that are
associated with their area of interest. The interest grew
into passion, and their dedication increased. Their immersion
into their field displayed a commitment that was unmatched by
any other authority in the world. They dug up the research
themselves, analyzed it, reported their findings. Suddenly,
they were viewed as the expert. It came from nowhere - their
methodical dedication drove them to become the best.
