The Business Thought Process

Although advertisements and massive marketing would have you believe that business thought is loud and brash, in reality, it is not.  Methodical business thought is built on the painstaking methodology of trial and error - you make your decision, make your mistakes, refine your next move, and follow through.  Not terribly exciting, until...

Until what?  Benjamin Franklin wrote, "Little strokes fell great oaks."  It is in the constant motion of small steps that you will discover your success.  If you do a little bit every day, after awhile a little becomes a lot, and you get a whole lot done with very little effort.

"It is not strength, but art, obtains the prize, And to be swift is less than to be wise. ’Tis more by art than force of num’rous strokes,"  said Alexander Pope.  Business imitates art in that it takes a constant view of the big picture, all the while persisting with the tiniest nuances of shade and color, until the stroking is complete and the masterpiece is set.

The Sistine Chapel was not a great work of art in the first few strokes.  It took tremendous perseverance, a backache to beat the best of them, and constant mixing of ingredients to produce the magnificence portrayed for generations to come.

"The man in the street does not know a star in the sky," advised Ralph Waldo Emerson.  Many people do not have the inner spirit of the visionary who is creating the large picture, and are therefore intolerant of that which they cannot "see."  Those who may have observed Michelangelo lying on his back as he endured paint dripping onto his face may have been critical of how sloppy he looked when working.  They may have seen the angels as too ephemeral, or the colors as too bold.

They did not have the song in their heart like the master.

If you are fortunate enough to have a song in your heart, manifest your vision.  It may seem too small if you compare it to the current competition.  Yours is unique, however, and has that precious element that is missing from all other endeavors.

It is a gift, and the world is waiting.

CQ Web Wide Success Quote:

"I just found it interesting to talk to adults I admired, and to discover that the path they took was never all that clearly defined. It was comforting to me when I figured out that you don't have to know what you want to do with your life; you just have to take a few steps in one direction, and other opportunities will open up." -- Anderson Cooper
