Persistence

The power of perseverance is often overlooked in our
fast-paced society, due to the growing acceptance of the
"immediate gratification" theory. Immediate gratification
appears to work well on flash movies, in magazine ads, and on
television, but those situations do not include the "before"
and "after" of real life. Lasting success comes out of
perseverance.
Benjamin Disraeli wrote, "Through perseverance many people win
success out of what seemed destined to be certain failure."
It is difficult to stick with your plan when the onslaught of
discouragement is coming at you from so many sides. An attack
from the outside may occur in subtle waves – a sidelong glance
from your spouse, mocking laughter from a friend, or the look
of tepid assessment from a potential business partner. Your
own inner belief system can also erode your strength, even if
that belief system is flawed. There may be an overwhelming
presence of negativity carried by your close family members -
negativity in their own lives that actually overflows and
touches the lives of those around them. You must build a wall
between yourself and this negativity - not the person, but the
"negativity."
It is the nature of life to wait around the corner with
adversity. You must learn to endure these little bumps in the
road, if sure success is to be earned. "We deem those happy
who from the experience of life have learned to bear its ills,
without being overcome by them." wrote Juvenal, Roman poet of
the first century A.D.
"The rewards for those who persevere far exceed the pain that
must precede the victory," wrote Ted W. Engstrom. Infuse
your life with enthusiasm. This encourages perseverance. It
is infectious - the good kind of infectious. The kind that
chews-up mediocrity and creates excellence.
Christian Nevell Bovee wrote, "We make way for the man who
boldly pushes past us." And we cheer him onward!
