Adaptability

Mahatma Gandhi was a great teacher to the world.  He was internationally recognized for his views on nonviolent protest in a world where the strong arm of brute force reigned.  He would point out to those he led, "Adaptability is not imitation.  It means power of resistance and assimilation."  He would continue, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."

Peter F. Drucker, American management guru, suggests that change, sweeping change, is nature's way of organizing those patterns of behavior that need revision.  "During periods of discontinuous, abrupt change, the essence of adaptation involves a keen sensitivity to what should be abandoned — not what should be changed or introduced. A willingness to depart from the familiar has distinct survival value."

Ralph Waldo Emerson was, perhaps, the most prolific of any who dared write about the power of adaptability.  He said, "A man is like a bit of Labrador spar, which has no lustre as you turn it in your hand until you come to a particular angle; then it shows deep and beautiful colors. There is no adaptation or universal applicability in men, but each has his special talent, and the mastery of successful men consists in adroitly keeping themselves where and when that turn shall be oftenest to be practised."

You need to develop a strong ability to adapt to mental and physical pressures.  The ability to bounce back like a prize-fighter is what separates the truly great from the mediocre.   Anyone can fall when pushed.  Anyone can give up when circumstances seem beyond their ability.

A true leader does not give up.  A true leader analyzes the situation, determines the flaws, rewrites the script, and adapts to a more sophisticated plan, with the final compensation being the rewards of success.

CQ Web Wide Success Quote:

"If I regarded my life from the point of view of the pessimist, I should be undone. I should seek in vain for the light that does not visit my eyes and the music that does not ring in my ears. I should beg night and day and never be satisfied. I should sit apart in awful solitude, a prey to fear and despair. But since I consider it a duty to myself and to others to be happy, I escape a misery worse than any physical deprivation." -- Helen Keller

Marketing Tips

Marketing Tip 1:

"My parents shared not only an improbable love, they shared an abiding faith in the possibilities of this nation. They would give me an African name, Barack, or blessed, believing that in a tolerant America your name is no barrier to success. They imagined me going to the best schools in the land, even though they weren't rich, because in a generous America you don't have to be rich to achieve your potential." -- Barack Obama

Marketing Tip 2:

"Encourage your people to be committed to a project rather than just be involved in it." -- Richard Pratt
