“You’re my hero,” is the highest compliment you can receive
when it is sincere and comes from the heart of someone you
love. If you are truly deserving of this title, this
compliment will be a total shock to you.
Thousands of ordinary people throughout history have received
this designation. They simply were doing the best they could
do with the circumstances - circumstances of adversity, in
many cases. These people were never aware of their acts of
heroism. They were individuals who had already developed
courage, perseverance and a generous spirit in their daily
lives. They were in such a habit of going the extra mile,
that when a desperate situation arose, there was no need for
them to think about it. Action was a matter of habit.
Les
Brown is one who has achieved the caliber of a hero. Thought
to be a “slow-learner” in elementary school, Brown struggled
through high school, but received no formal training after
secondary school in any educational or vocational programs.
His passion-to-learn and hunger-for-greatness led him into
success as a DJ and broadcast manager. Wearing his newfound
success like a feather in his cap, he bought his adoptive
mother a new home, as compensation for all the struggles he
put her through as a raucous teen. His troubles were not to
end so quickly. Due to his lack of legal preparation in
matters of real estate and taxes, some issues arose regarding
debts from a past owner, and he was unable to retain his
ownership of the house. Scarred, but not defeated, he rose
from the depths of despair to purchase another home for her,
armed with his the knowledge of experience for future success.
He progressed through an evolutionary process into the role of
community activist, community leader, political commentator,
and three-term legislator. He now holds prominence as a
premier keynote speaker and international authority on
understanding and stimulating human potential.
Les Brown has received the Council of Peers Award of
Excellence and is the recipient of Toastmasters’ International
Golden Gavel Award. Not bad for a problem kid!
True success, that which leaves a lasting impression, springs
from the character within a man. This character is a result of
the anchors, or values, in your life, and the cultivation of
those values. It is the result of an attitude that pursues
consistent, persistent action toward purpose.
