William DeMille (1878-1955) was one of the great pioneers of
the movie industry. He wrote over 34 books and plays that
were made into films, became a producer, then a director of
over 52 films. He was the Co-host and presenter of the First
Annual Academy Awards and Chairman of the Academy.
This was a man who earned great accomplishments. He was also
a man who admired others for their contributions and fearless
pursuit of fame in a competitive industry. DeMille said, "I
have always admired the ability to bite off more than one can
chew and then chew it."
I am sure you have noticed that successful people have the
ability to accomplish, far beyond the average. How is it they
achieve so much?
Franklin D. Roosevelt said, "It is common sense to take a
method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try
another. But above all, try something." The key here is to
act. Not only to act, but also to keep on with continuous
action.
Do you limit yourself with a self-imposed belief system that
says you are not accomplished enough to achieve something
great? World-class poet Theodore Roethke wrote, "What we need
are more people who specialize in the impossible."
Most of us remember the brash electricity of the great
Muhammed Ali as he recited, "Your eyes can't hit what your
eyes can't see, float like a butterfly sting like a bee,
rumble young man rumble." Ali's electric magnetism spread
out like a tidal wave over his public. He elicited strong
emotion in people, whether that of admiration or that of
disgust. but no one could argue about the fact that he had
passion. Passion has the ability to take you the
distance.
As you set out to accomplish great things, dream big and begin
at the level where you are. Small, nearly imperceptible
action is better than thought. If you push a ball, it begins
to roll. Merely thinking about it will not put it into
action.
Once you begin with a small action, continue on with small
actions, linking them together toward a common end. Once you
begin to habitually move in this manner, your accomplishments
will accumulate with, what seems like, little effort from
you.
You will forget those evenings when you fell asleep at the
computer as you pounded out that last thought, or the days you
pushed your body through that one extra rep with your weights,
or the elitist dinners you gave up so you could invest in your
own business.
"You have all the reason in the world to achieve your grandest
dreams. Imagination plus innovation equals realization," said
Denis Waitley.
The racehorse only wins by a nose, but the rewards of that
minute effort are exponentially great. You, as a human being,
have the ability to dream big and achieve every goal you can
imagine - physical, spiritual, mental, and financial.
Brian Tracy, one of my great personal development mentors,
said, "I've found that luck is quite predictable. If you want
more luck, take more chances. Be more active. Show up more
often."
